the onitsuka tiger

my fave sneaker at the moment is an off-white asics onitsuka tiger with a cyan stripe. i love the flat sole and the narrow rounded toe. it’s a great sneaker to wear with tappered jeans or slim trousers that break slightly at its hem while it meets the sneaker’s top. also, a great compliment to a dark blazer, which completes the look. i used to disdain retro looking sneakers in the past because they seemed too kitschy, but my opinion of them has changed. anyways, i just fell in love with a modified version of the onitsuka tiger with three velcro straps that comes with an orange stripe:

when i was younger, i hated my asics, because i wanted to be cool and have nikes or reebok or LA Gear like everyone else did. but they've grown on me. but i dont think i'll be leaving my chucks anytime soon.

my childhood path through sneakers were yellow keds, adidas, one pair of high top chuck taylors in junior high, nike, back to adidas with stan smiths and then as a young adult, sperry topsiders. wore them sockless even. then i discovered dela soul and fell in love with the nike lava boot and rap. had a brief affair with new balance 802s as an undergrad and then moved in with puma, after seeing the documentary ‘tokyo olympiad’ by kon ichikawa (criterion collection 155), the last couple of years. broke up with puma and currently shacking up with the asic onitsuka tiger. never tried reebok or la gear or brooks as a kid.
